South Shuswap

1. Bastion Mountain equestrianbike

Description: Views of Shuswap Lake and Salmon Arm, forest, steep cliffs.  
Directions: 15 km west of Salmon Arm on the Trans Canada Hwy turn right onto Sunnybrae Rd. Follow this road for approx. 6.5 km and turn left at the foot of a slide, onto the gravel road going up Bastion Mountain. Keep to the main road for 11 km to the top of the cliffs near the relay tower. A trail goes along the cliff's edge.

2. Blind Bay Lookout - McArthur Heights hiker

Distance: 1km  
Description: A very steep challenging climb up small sections of scree slope and exposed rock. The summit features panoramic views of Shuswap Lake over Blind Bay.  
Directions: Approx. 9.3km East of Sorrento, or approx. 24 km West of Salmon Arm, turn North on onto Balmoral Rd. and travel North to Reedman Point Rd., approx 2km past the Blind Bay Rd. junction. Turn right and take the next left onto McBride Rd. Follow McBride Rd. through the McArthur Heights subdivision to the end of the road and park (make sure to not block any driveways). The trail starts 10m up the ATV track on the left (private property on the right). For an extended hike, follow the signs from the summit to the Balmoral parking lot (see Balmoral Bluffs Trails)

3. Bryden and Pement Lakes

Description: Lakes, creeks, forest, campsites.  
Directions: Follow directions to Skimikin Lake. On the West side of Skimikin Lake, travel .6 km west on Charcoal Creek Forest Service Rd #180. Travel approx. 14.6 km keeping to the right. After 4km, right after a switchback over a small creek, turn right and proceed 2.2 km to the parking area. Pement Lake is approx. 2 km east on the right fork and Bryden is a further 1.5 km on the left fork.

4. Eagle Bay to White Lake cycling

Description: A scenic ride along Shuswap Lake with several beach access points for swimming. Optional loop rides past Herman Lake and White Lake.  
Directions: Approx. 9.3km East of Sorrento, or approx. 24 km West of Salmon Arm, turn North on onto Balmoral Rd. Continue North, as Balmoral Rd turns into Eagle Bay Rd. Follow out to Eagle Bay.

5. Herman Lake hiker

Distance:  
Description: Small fishing lake with numerous trails, a boardwalk, wildflowers and birds. There is a small Recreation Site with camping and a pit toilet.  
Directions: Approx. 9.3km East of Sorrento, or approx. 24 km West of Salmon Arm, turn North on onto Balmoral Rd. Turn right immediately onto White Lake Rd. and follow out to White Lake, where you will turn left onto Parri Rd. At the end of the pavement on Parri Rd. turn left on the White Lake Forest Service Rd. and go approx. 8.3km to Herman Lake. keep left at the corral, and watch for a sign on the right.

6a. Herald Provincial Park hiking

Description: Lake, beach, forest, creek, lake, birds, picnic areas, campsite, swimming.  
Directions: 15 km west of Salmon Arm turn right onto Sunnybrae Rd and travel 12 km. Park in the day use area on the south side of the road or at Margaret Falls on the north side. Water access also.

6b. Margaret Falls hiker

Description: Waterfalls, creek, bridges, forest, old growth.  
Directions: 15 km west of Salmon Arm turn right onto Sunnybrae Rd and travel 12 km. Park in the pay parking area on the north side of the road, or in Herald Provincial Park's day use area on the south side.

6c. Upper Canyon at Margaret Falls hiker

Distance: 1.5km  
Description: Waterfalls, creek, bridge, forest.  
Directions: Walk east of the Margaret Falls parking area to just past the gravel bank on the left. The trail switch backs up and around the top of the falls, crosses Reinecker Creek on a bridge and returns on the west side of the creek and back to the road. Turn left back to the parking lot, or begin the trail on the west side at the yellow gate a few minutes west of the parking area. At the top on the east side of the little bridge you can continue up beside the creek to reach another waterfall.

7. Notch Hill Loop cycling

Description: Paved roads through rural countryside and rolling hills  
Directions: Turn South from Hwy 1 at Sorrento onto Notch Hill Rd. Follow the road to the Balmoral Rd. junction at Hwy 1. Return the same way or via Hwy 1.

8. Reinecker Creek hikercycle

Distance: 20km  

Description:The Reinecker Creek trail system is made up of two routes that parallel Reinecker Creek. The West trail is a multi-use trail that sees motorized traffic, and is two to three metres wide and roughly 10km long. The East trail is a non-motorized route that is 0.5 metres wide and 10km long. There are two crossing points (North and South). The South Crossing is about halfway through the East and West trails and the North crossing is at the top end of both trails. The East trail is designated no-bikes from Herald Park to the South Crossing, as bikes are not allowed in the Park at this time. The Upper East section is open to mountain bikes and hikers. 

The East trail begins in the North end of Herald Park, off of the Upper Canyon Loop. It passes through several forest types and unique terrain. The figure 8 shape of the trail system provides several loop options, ranging from 10 to 20km.

It is possible to continue past the north end of the trail system on the forest service road into the White Lake valley, but this route is un-marked and should only be used by those familiar with the area.

 

Directions:
Upper trailhead - Traveling west from Salmon Arm for 11km, turn right on Sunnybrae Canoe Point Rd and follow for 7km. Turn left on Bastion mountain FSR and follow signs to junction at 4.8km. Turn right and follow for 1.5km to the trailhead.

Lower Trailhead - Traveling west from Salmon Arm for 11km, turn right on Sunnybrae Canoe Point Rd and follow for 11.5km to Herald Park day-use pay parking lot. Turn right. Follow trail signs to Sunnybrae Rd. Cross the road and turn right. Follow for 250m to wooden stairs on the left. Follow trail for 1.4km on the Upper Canyon Trail to East Reinecker Creek Trail junction. Turn right.

The other lower trailhead is the Margaret Falls Pay Parking Lot. From here, follow Sunnybrae Canoe point Rd. west for 250m to the wooden stairs on the left.Follow trail for 1.4km on the Upper Canyon Trail to East Reinecker Creek Trail junction. Turn right.

9. Skimikin Lake equestrian

Description: Lake, forest, fishing.  
Directions: 14 km west of Salmon Arm on the Trans Canada Hwy, turn left onto Tappen Valley Rd, just before the Tappen overpass. Approx. 4 km further, turn left onto Skimikin Rd and travel 6.1 km to the lake.

10. Sorrento - Blind Bay Park Trail

Description: Creek, forest, park.  
Directions: Traveling west on the Trans Canada Hwy in Sorrento turn left at the flashing light onto Notch Hill Rd. Turn at the first right onto Dilworth Rd and then left onto Davidson Rd. The park is .3 km up on the left. The short trail circles the park.

11. Sunnybrae Bluffs

Description: View of Shuswap Lake and mountains, steep cliffs, forest, wildflowers, birds.  
Directions: 15km west of Salmon Arm on the Trans Canada Hwy, turn right onto Sunnybrae Rd. Travel 4 km and park at the Sunnybrae Recreational Area parking lot. The trail head is across the road. .4 km up the trail is the trail head to Braelyn Rd for .5 km. Here also is the start of Scarp trail which ascends for .9 km to the top of the cliffs. Another trail leaves from the parking area and follows along the bay.

12. White Lake Lookout Trail cycle

Description: Views of White Lakes and Tappen Valley, steep cliffs, forest, creek.  
Directions: 9.2 km east of Sorrento on the Trans Canada Hwy, turn left at the Balmoral Store and right onto White Lake Rd. At the Parri Rd intersection, travel 1.1 km uphill on the Little White Lake Forest Service Rd. Park just before a creek, then hike the old road track on the right, staying right and looking for the foot trail a little further up on the left.

Note: White Lake Rd loops, returning to the Trans Canada Hwy at Carlin 3.6 km farther east than the Balmoral turnoff.

13. Balmoral Bluff Trail System cycleequestrian

Description: The Balmoral Bluffs trail system was created in 2008 to connect with the Blind Bay Lookout and White Lake trails systems. From the parking lot, there is a lower easy loop. At the top of this loop is a trail that goes up to the top of a ridge, which, at the end, overlooks Alpen Paradies subdivision, and Blind Bay. Continuing up from there, there are two ways up to the main connector trail between White Lake and Blind Bay. These can be done as a loop or as through-routes to the Blind Bay Lookout or White Lake.  
Directions: Approx. 9.3km East of Sorrento, or approx. 24 km West of Salmon Arm, turn North on onto Balmoral Rd. Follow for roughly 1.5km and watch for large parking lot on the right, just before Alpen Paradies subdivision.

14. Blind Bay to White Lake Connector cyclehiker

Description: The Blind Bay to White Lake Connector was completed in the summer of 2009. This trail connects the Balmoral Bluffs Trail System to the White Lake Lookout Trail and the White Lake Bike Park. This trail features a wide variety of terrain, and forest types. The viewpoint above the White Lake and Tappen Valleys provides a breathtaking view of Salmon Arm to Notch Hill. If you are riding your bike, don't forget to stop in at the John Evdokimoff Bike Park to brush up on your technical skills. While not a technical trail, there is some signifigant elevation gain and loss.

Balmoral Trailhead - Approx. 9.3km East of Sorrento, or approx. 24 km West of Salmon Arm, turn North on onto Balmoral Rd. Follow for roughly 1.5km and watch for large parking lot on the right, just before Alpen Paradies subdivision.

White Lake Trailhead - 9.2 km East of Sorrento, on the Trans Canada Hwy, turn left at the Balmoral Store and right onto White Lake Rd. Follow for 6kms to the White Lake Bike Park.

20km West of Salmon Arm on Trans Canada Highway, turn right at White Lake rd. Follow to the Parri Rd. junction and turn left. Follow for 0.5km to the White Lake Bike Park.

15. John Evdokimoff Bike Skills Park cyclehiker

Description: The John Evdokimoff Bike Skills Park is located next to White Lake, and features a selection of dirt jumps, tetter-totters, drops, log rides, and a-frames. There is also a downhill trail that runs from the top of the park to the bottom. There are washrooms, and a picnic shelter for parents to watch their kids from.

The bike park is also a trailhead for the White Lake Lookout Trail and the Blind Bay to White Lake Trail

This park is dedicated to John Evdokimoff, who was lost in Shuswap Lake in 2008. John was the champion for the park and was instrumental in its construction.

 
Directions: Traveling west from Salmon Arm for 20km, turn right at White Lake Rd. At the junction of White Lake Rd and Parri Rd, turn left and follow for 500m to the White Lake Bike Park
