Trail Notes / Current Conditions:

July 23, 2017 There are numerous trail issues including eroded tread (water and motor bikes), dead standing trees, windthrown trees on trail, poor signage, and brushing. No work will be done on this trail until fire danger has decreased.

Trail Description:

The East peak is the longest distance and the most arduous climb, but a true single track mountain trail with spectacular views.

From the North Trailhead the hike up to the East peak is a steep climb with switchbacks through the forest.  From the forest the trail will start to level off more and approach the spine of the mountain.  After a walk along the spine with steep drop offs on either side of the trail you approach the first viewpoint offering a stunning 360 degree view of Salmon Arm, Salmon River Valley, and Deep Creek area.  If you continue on you will come to a second viewpoint with a stunning view of the Salmon Arm area. To get to the second viewpoint there is a short section with an exposed rock scramble.

Access:

East Peak North Trailhead: (Allow 0.5 hours from Salmon Arm) Drive 10km south of Hwy 1 on Hwy 97B to Deep Creek Rd. Follow Deep Creek Rd for approx. 4 km to the Forest Service Rd just before property at #496 (watch for children and be respectful of the residence). Follow the steep logging road up and then right onto North Ida Forest Rd. Continue for 5.5 km, staying on the main road, then park at the small road exiting on the right. Walk (or 4wd drive) this road for approx. 1.3 km and watch for the trailhead on the left. A small parking area is located on the right. NO motorized use allowed on trail.

West Peak trailhead at the “saddle” (and East Peak south trailhead): (Allow 0.5 hours from Salmon Arm) From downtown Salmon Arm go south on Shuswap Ave which becomes Foothills Rd. After 3.4 km turn left onto the gravel road immediately prior to Mount Ida Cemetery. This becomes Forest Service Rd #825 in a few metres on the right, a deactivated road suitable for 4wd. Follow this road up approx. 7 km, staying on the right at each junction. At approx. 7 km an open landing offers views over the Salmon River Valley. This makes a good parking spot for a longer walk, or go 3.5 km further over rougher terrain to the “saddle” trailhead.

Access Map: Via Deep Creek, Bottom of FSR #825
